I first became acquainted with K.J at the Festival of Horses last December (’08) where I observed him take a Mustang, not long off the range, and get him under saddle in three days; not finished by any means but, in my opinion, a remarkable feat by any standard. I had, for sometime, been looking for a trainer to help me build and refine my horsemanship skills but, up to that point, really hadn’t found what I needed. Watching K.J. I had a suspicion that at last I had. So, in late December I, and my two horses-now three in the photo; one another Mustang-began “school’ with him. Up to that point I’d done a pretty fair job in training my Boys but I’d made a lot of mistakes and had to pay for the same “real estate” two or more times; fact is I’d just plain hit the wall of my ability. It’s now four months since we began and, and looking back on it, I couldn’t be happier with the progress I, and my Boys, have made. K.J’s horsemanship and equine knowledge, built over 25 years, has helped him to create teaching methodology that has proved to be as sound and consistent as I could ask for. It’s instructive to see the horses at his ranch; all of them are calm and are healthy. Just as important they LIKE him- all of us know that you can’t buy, coerce or fake that!
My experience has revealed that K.J has an innate sense of what the “problem” is and how to fix it; better still, he fits the lesson to the student. His is definitely not a one-size-fits-all training methodology. His fees are very reasonable and, even though he charges by the hour, he doesn’t watch the clock. He believes that the lessons not over until both the horse and his partner finish on a successful note for the day; thus building confidence in both student, the horse and with each other. I suspect there may be trainers of equal quality in this area but I doubt you’d find one any better than he is.
